Over the last ten days we have had several guests to stay and sometimes it can be difficult to please all of the people all of the time! With a mixture of carnivores and vegetarians there certainly have been challenges and it is sometimes easier to go back to some basic dishes.
Although in theory the carnivores can eat vegetarian dishes, some veggie recipes can seem too unusual to be acceptable to the regular meat and two veg eater.
Sausage and mash was one dinner with good pork sausages from Real Food Exeter and some home made leek and cheese vegetarian sausages accompanied with fried onion, and swede and carrot mash. This certainly was a crowd pleaser!
Another evening I cooked Cottage Pie with minced beef, and another with soya mince although in other respects they were identical. The carnivores tried them both and they went down a treat.
Macaroni cheese with peas is another simple and traditional meal that people barely think about the fact that it is vegetarian and was enjoyed by all.
With so many new recipes around portraying the new and unusual, it is important not to forget the simple and traditional!
