It can’t have escaped your notice that I haven’t been adding any new recipes in the last couple of years. The main reason for that is that I have turned my attention from creating recipes to creating pots!

I had my first pottery lesson nearly 10 years ago now and have been doing some form of pottery ever since initially on a very part time basis. However in the last couple of years my hobby has almost become a full time occupation and I now sell my work in several shops.

Her are some fun observations:-

Pottery is Like Baking

There are so many similarities between baking and pottery that whenever I am doing one, I am reminded of the other!

1. When you ‘wedge’ clay to prepare it, it is very similar to kneading dough
2. Rolling out clay for slab buiding is like rolling out pastry
3. Cutting out shapes for hand building is like cutting out biscuits from pastry
4. Firing in the kin is all about reaching the right temperature and creating the correct level of ‘heatwork’ – just like baking something in the oven
5. I make my own glazes for recipes which are very similar to a recipe for a dish

So I think my years as a food blogger were just preparing my for life as a potter!

Pottery Always Evolves

I started out making coasters, platters and candle holders that I sold to guests who came to our Bed and Breakfast which we ran from 2015 until 2020

Since getting into making my own glazes I have loved making things that can be colourful – soap dishes, vases, incense stick holders and also small heart shaped brooches.

Just in the last six months I have started doing more sculptural work – mermaids and Flower Goddess wall hangings. I want to develop this further as a symbol of the empowerment of women and how life knocks us down and we learn to emerge and come back stronger. I will write in more detail about this another day.

But for now I just wanted to let you know what I am up to.
