How to Unwind While Something Is in the Oven?

For all of us who enjoy cooking, the kitchen is not just another room. It’s the place where we feel most at home. I’m sure I’m not exaggerating when I compare it to a small sanctuary where we enjoy chopping vegetables while reading the recipe. Or where we enjoy the sound of bubbling stew and the smell of a pie we’ve just put in the oven. However, cooking isn’t a non-stop action. There are moments of free time we can fill with some fun activity that won’t distract us but will make cooking even more relaxing.

Scrolling through the news is definitely stressful nowadays, so choosing a classic pastime like solitaire games could be a great fit. Trust me, many choose to play solitaire online for free because it’s an easygoing game perfect for quick breaks while waiting for the oven timer to ding.

Why Solitaire Is the Ideal Kitchen Break Activity?

The answer lies in its name. But not the solitaire, but the early name from the late 18th century, when the game was first invented. Then, the game was called “Patience”. Now, the connection between cooking and solitaire games is more obvious, since cooking is also a kind of “game” that needs a lot of patience.

However, although patience is in the mix, solitaire doesn’t require you to completely focus on it and forget about dinner. No, you won’t burn your loaf of bread if you play a round or two of solitaire. You’ll just have a little pause, but you definitely won’t lose track of what’s going on in the kitchen.

Just think of passive scrolling through Instagram or TikTok feeds. These activities can become stressful when so much information comes out of the screen. On the contrary, solitaire games can actually reduce stress. You only think about cards, which one to choose to match the order, and that’s it.

Therefore, solitaire requires a light focus, and when you successfully clear the board, you’ll feel great and ready for the next step in your recipe.

What Solitaire Games to Choose?

As I’ve already mentioned, solitarie has been around since the 18th century. The longevity of the game proves that simplicity, combined with a bit of strategic thinking, is the right formula for success. Therefore, it’s no surprise that solitaire has become one of the most popular single-player games in the world, with so many versions. You can choose simple classics or a more complex variation.

So, if you’ve never used these small kitchen breaks to play games, or you’ve never played solitaire before, here are a few versions you can try. The right game should definitely match the time you have, to avoid burning that loaf in the oven.

  • You’re waiting for the water to boil (5-10 minutes): If you have just a few free minutes, try classic Klondike. This game is very simple and takes only 3‑10 minutes to finish a round. Ideal for calming before the kitchen “chaos” begins.
  • You’ve put a cake in the oven and you wait to turn golden (15-20 minutes): When you have more free time, like in this case, you can choose a bit more strategic version of solitaire, like FreeCell. The game rounds last 5-15 minutes, and you need to figure out how to solve this puzzle using four free spots to move cards and access the one you need to make matches.
  • You’ve made your bread dough, and it needs time to rest and rise (30 minutes): This may be the perfect time to explore more complex, but more engaging solitaire versions. One of them is Solitaire Grand Harvest. It combines the classic TriPeaks Solitaire with challenges, fun characters and the thrill of levelling up and unlocking rewards.

Whichever game you pick, one thing is sure – you’ll have a blast. You can pause it anytime to return to your beloved kitchen adventure and come back when it’s time for a new break.
